Auckland Police are seeking public help to locate Heremaia Manuel after a central Auckland burglary investigation. In a release published at 5.14pm on Monday 22 June, Police said Manuel, 41, is wanted in connection with a sexually motivated burglary in central Auckland. Police said warrants in lieu of summons had been issued over alleged offending in the early hours of Saturday 20 June.
The release identifies the location as Freeman's Bay and says an alleged offender entered a woman's home in the early hours before allegedly committing an indecent assault inside. Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Friend, Auckland Central Area Investigations Manager, said the male inside was disturbed at around 3am and fled from the address. Police said they were called and began an urgent investigation that led to the identification of the alleged offender.
The wording needs care. Manuel is sought by Police, and the release says warrants in lieu of summons have been issued in the Auckland District Court. Police say he is sought for committing an indecent assault and burglary. The public article should not go beyond that. It should not imply a court finding or add details that Police have not released. In cases involving alleged sexual offending and a home intrusion, accurate language matters for the victim, the investigation and the person being sought.
Police said welfare has been put in place for the victim. That detail is important because it shows the case is not only a search appeal. It is also a serious incident affecting a person in her home. Home-entry allegations can unsettle a wider neighbourhood because they challenge a basic sense of safety. Freeman's Bay is a dense central suburb, close to Ponsonby, the city centre and busy late-night routes. People there may be reading the release not as abstract crime news but as a warning about an incident close to home.
Detective Senior Sergeant Friend said Police believe Manuel is likely to be in the inner Auckland CBD area and is also known to have frequented parts of Mangere in the past. Police asked anyone who knows where he is right now to call 111. They asked people with general information about his whereabouts to call 105 and use reference number 260620/7807. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
Those contact details are the practical public-interest core of the story. A wanted appeal is useful only if people know what to do with information. Calling 111 is for current location information where Police can act immediately. Calling 105 is for non-urgent information. Crime Stoppers provides an anonymous route for people who may be reluctant to speak directly.
The release also says additional footage was uploaded to the Auckland City Police Facebook page and that media could request a copy from Police. That suggests investigators are using public visibility to strengthen the search. For Auckland residents, the safest response is to avoid approaching Manuel directly and pass any information to Police. The story is current, local and serious, but the reporting boundary is clear: Police have made a public appeal, identified the alleged offending they are investigating and asked for help locating a named person.
